Days after the high-profile U.S. military operation in Venezuela, the White House has confirmed that President Donald Trump and his advisers are weighing a “range of options” to pursue the acquisition of Greenland, including the possible use of U.S. military force.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Tuesday that Trump views Greenland as a national security priority for the United States given its strategic location in the Arctic and the need to deter rival powers. She emphasised that while diplomatic and other approaches are being discussed, “utilising the U.S. military is always an option at the Commander in Chief’s disposal.”
The remarks have sparked strong international reaction, with Danish and European leaders firmly rejecting any notion of military acquisition and reaffirming Greenland’s sovereignty as part of the Kingdom of Denmark. NATO allies have also criticised the rhetoric, saying threats of force against a fellow member would undermine long-standing alliances.
Trump’s renewed focus on Greenland follows the U.S. capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in a controversial operation earlier this month, a move that already drew global debate and heightened tensions around U.S. foreign policy.
