US War Department Seizes Second ‘Dark Fleet’ Oil Tanker in Caribbean

The United States War Department has seized a second so-called “dark fleet” oil tanker, this time intercepting the vessel in the Caribbean Sea, according to the US Southern Command.

In a statement, Southern Command confirmed that the tanker, identified as the M/T Sophia, was taken into custody and is currently being escorted to the United States. The operation marks the latest action by US forces against vessels accused of operating outside international regulations and sanctions frameworks.

Officials said the seizure forms part of ongoing efforts to clamp down on illicit oil transportation networks believed to be undermining global security and sanctions enforcement. Further details on the ownership of the tanker and the nature of its cargo have not yet been released.

The development comes amid heightened global scrutiny of “dark fleet” operations, which typically involve ships that disable tracking systems to evade detection while transporting sanctioned oil.
