A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Gbenga Hashim, has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of plotting to weaken opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued on Sunday by his media office, Hashim alleged that the APC is using legal and institutional measures to undermine opposition participation in the democratic process.
He maintained, however, that no legal or administrative manoeuvres would derail Nigeria’s multiparty democracy, stressing that democratic competition remains fundamental to the country’s political stability.
The PDP chieftain expressed confidence that the ruling party would be defeated in the 2027 general elections, noting that Nigerians are increasingly aware of the need for accountability and inclusive governance.
Hashim, a long-time figure in Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement, described the situation as part of a broader pattern that raises serious concerns about the future of democratic competition in the country. He urged relevant institutions to act independently and ensure a level playing field for all political parties ahead of the polls.
