Electricity supply has been restored to the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) following the reconnection of power to the FCT Water Board, bringing relief to residents of Abuja who experienced water shortages in recent days.
The restoration of power has allowed water treatment plants operated by the FCT Water Board to resume operations, leading to the gradual return of potable water supply across affected parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
AEDC had earlier disconnected the Water Board over accumulated unpaid electricity bills reportedly spanning more than one year. The disconnection led to the shutdown of key water facilities, triggering public concern over access to clean water and possible public health implications.
Amid growing public outcry, AEDC approved the reconnection on humanitarian grounds. However, the power distribution company has issued a two-week ultimatum, requiring the FCT Water Board to present and begin implementing a credible repayment plan to settle its outstanding debt. AEDC warned that failure to comply could result in a fresh disconnection, in line with regulatory provisions.
In its response, AEDC emphasized that disconnection remains a last resort but stressed that all customers, including government agencies, must meet their financial obligations to ensure sustainable electricity supply.
Residents have welcomed the return of water supply but are calling on the FCT authorities and the Water Board to resolve the underlying issues permanently to avoid future disruptions to essential services. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
