President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has transmitted 24 health sector bills to the Senate for consideration, signaling a major push to reform Nigeria’s healthcare legal framework. The bills were contained in a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio and read during Tuesday’s plenary.

The proposed legislation seeks to update and streamline laws governing health institutions, regulatory bodies, and professional councils, with a focus on improving efficiency and service delivery. A key aspect of the reforms is the reduction of over‑bloated board memberships across hospitals and health agencies.

The bills cover a broad spectrum of institutions, including tertiary and teaching hospitals, specialty hospitals, professional councils, and regulatory agencies such as the National Hospital for Women and Children, Federal Medical Centres, National Eye Centre, National Ear Care Centre, NAFDAC, and the National Blood Service Agency. They also include proposals like the Records Officers Registration and Digital Health Bill 2025 and the Federal College of Complementary and Alternative Medicine Bill 2025.

Following the transmission, Senate President Akpabio referred all 24 bills to the Senate Committee on Rules and Business for further review before debate and potential passage into law.
