Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has commended the Senate for passing the constitutional amendment bill seeking to establish state police across Nigeria, describing the move as a bold and necessary step toward strengthening security at the grassroots.
In a statement, the governor said the development represents a major milestone in the country’s efforts to address longstanding security challenges through a more decentralised policing system.
Sanwo-Olu also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his role in advancing the state police conversation, noting that the President has consistently advocated for reforms that empower local authorities to address security issues within their jurisdictions.
According to the governor, the establishment of state police would allow states to develop security structures that are more responsive to local realities and community needs.
He said Lagos, as a rapidly growing and dynamic state, faces unique security challenges that require solutions tailored to its environment and population.
While welcoming the Senate’s action, Sanwo-Olu noted that additional legislative and implementation processes remain before the reform becomes fully operational.
He described the passage of the amendment bill as significant progress toward creating a safer and more secure Nigeria.
