President Bola Tinubu has called on Governor Siminalayi Fubara, political leaders, and their supporters in Rivers State to exercise restraint and uphold the rule of law following escalating tensions after last Saturday’s local government council election. The President expressed concern over reports of arson and explosions in the state, warning against further violence.
In a statement, President Tinubu urged all political actors to de-escalate the situation and ensure their supporters refrain from engaging in violence or destructive actions. He emphasized the need for peace and directed the police to restore and maintain law and order immediately.
The President also instructed law enforcement agencies to secure public institutions and prevent any acts of vandalism, particularly against government facilities built with public funds.
“Self-help has no place in a democratic system, especially after 25 years of continuous democracy,” President Tinubu stated, stressing the importance of using judicial channels to resolve political disputes. He reaffirmed that the judiciary is the appropriate avenue to settle disagreements arising from the election.
As tensions remain high, the President’s call for calm underscores the need for peaceful resolution and the safeguarding of democratic principles in Rivers State.
