President Bola Tinubu has identified frivolous appeals, the intimidation of judges by lawyers, and judgments based on technicalities as key challenges hindering the fight against corruption in Nigeria. Speaking on Monday during the opening of the 6th Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)/National Judicial Institute (NJI) Capacity Building Workshop for Justices and Judges, President Tinubu stressed that these issues must be curtailed to ensure the speedy adjudication of corruption cases.

Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the National Judicial Institute in Abuja, the President acknowledged that while the prosecution of corruption cases has significantly improved in recent years due to justice sector reforms, more needs to be done to address the remaining obstacles.
“The misuse of appeals and the undue pressure on judges compromise the integrity of the judiciary and slow down the resolution of corruption cases,” President Tinubu remarked. He further emphasized that judgments based on technicalities rather than substance undermine the core purpose of justice and the fight against corruption.
The President described the capacity-building workshop as a crucial platform to collectively combat Nigeria’s common enemy—corruption. He called for continuous collaboration between the judiciary and anti-corruption agencies to ensure that justice prevails and that the war against corruption is won.
The workshop, organized by the EFCC and NJI, aims to equip judges with the necessary tools and knowledge to handle complex corruption cases effectively, thus advancing the nation’s anti-corruption agenda.
