Senate Backs Supreme Court Ruling on Financial Autonomy for Local Governments

The Nigerian Senate has thrown its full support behind the Supreme Court’s recent judgment granting financial autonomy to the 774 local governments across the country. Senate President Godswill Akpabio made this declaration after the Senate resumed from a closed-door session following a motion raised by Sen. Tony Nwoye (LP-Anambra).

Nwoye’s motion addressed concerns over attempts by some state governments, through their Houses of Assembly, to enact laws that would undermine the Supreme Court’s ruling on local government autonomy. In response, the Senate approved two key resolutions from the motion, urging all state and local governments to comply with the Supreme Court’s ruling on the disbursement and utilization of funds allocated to local governments.

Akpabio thanked Sen. Nwoye for raising the motion, reiterating the Senate’s commitment to supporting financial independence for local governments. “We stand solidly behind the Supreme Court judgment… and believe that one of the legacies of this administration will be the sanitization of the local government system,” Akpabio stated
