Minister Wale Edun Hosts Japan International Cooperation Agency to Strengthen Economic Ties

The Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, welcomed a high-level delegation from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to the Ministry of Finance headquarters on Wednesday evening. The delegation, led by JICA President Tanaka Akihiko, visited to review the progress of ongoing initiatives, explore new areas of cooperation, and discuss proposals for future projects aimed at fostering stronger economic collaboration between Nigeria and Japan.

The discussions underscored the importance of swift implementation of current projects, alongside the need for reforms and clear policies to deepen economic ties. Mr. Edun emphasized the crucial role JICA has played in supporting Nigeria’s development efforts, particularly in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s focus on revitalizing the economy through boosting local production and supporting key sectors.

The Minister highlighted Nigeria’s agricultural potential, drawing attention to the two-season harvest cycle and expressing optimism about the success of the ongoing wet season harvest. Additionally, Edun outlined the nation’s plans to transition toward local crude oil refining, a move expected to supply raw materials for various industries, including textiles, paints, petrochemicals, and pharmaceuticals.

He expressed appreciation for JICA’s ongoing support and welcomed further dialogue on new areas of collaboration that could drive Nigeria’s economic growth. The Minister also reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to meeting its obligations under the partnership with JICA, emphasizing the strategic importance of the relationship for the country’s development.

The meeting included key figures such as Otsuka Takuya, Chief Secretary of JICA, and Sanyade Okoli, Special Adviser to the President on Finance and Economy.
