The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, has said that Nigeria’s drive toward fiscal federalism will not achieve meaningful results without fairness, accountability, and shared responsibility across all tiers of government.

Speaking at a tax compliance workshop in Abuja, he explained that ongoing fiscal reforms are designed to build a more equitable and sustainable tax system. According to him, the reforms are also intended to strengthen national development and reduce Nigeria’s dependence on volatile revenue sources.

States Urged to Improve Tax Compliance

The Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service, Zacch Adedeji, warned that uneven compliance levels among states and government-owned entities are undermining fiscal fairness.

He stressed that every tier of government must contribute its fair share to the national revenue pool. He also disclosed that a performance-based recognition framework is being developed to reward compliant states.

Revenue Target and Reform Drive

Adedeji further revealed that the Nigeria Revenue Service is targeting ₦40 trillion in tax revenue this year. He said achieving this goal will depend on stronger collaboration among institutions, improved accountability, and the deployment of technology-driven compliance systems.

Call for Collaboration and Transparency

Both officials emphasized the need for enhanced intergovernmental cooperation, digital tax systems, and reduced leakages in order to restore public trust and strengthen Nigeria’s fiscal stability.
