Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, has been elected Chairman of the Budget and Administration Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, also known as the Fifth Committee. The development places Nigeria at the helm of one of the UN’s most influential bodies responsible for overseeing administrative and budgetary matters.

In his acceptance remarks, Ibrahim described his election as a great honour and a significant responsibility, pledging to provide strategic leadership at a time when the United Nations is facing financial pressures, institutional reforms, and growing global challenges. He assured the organisation’s 193 member states of his commitment to effective management and consensus-building.

The Fifth Committee plays a central role in the operations of the United Nations, overseeing its budget, human resources, and administrative affairs. Ibrahim said he would work closely with member states and the UN Secretariat to ensure transparency, accountability, and efficient use of resources.

The Nigerian diplomat also expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Nigerian people for their support, describing his election as a historic achievement for the country. His emergence is being viewed as another boost to Nigeria’s growing influence in international diplomacy and multilateral affairs.
