The office of Senate President Godswill Akpabio has dismissed reports claiming he promised to secure senatorial tickets for lawmakers who lost in their party primaries.
In a statement issued by his media adviser, Eseme Eyiboh, the Senate President described the reports as false, stating that he neither made nor authorized any such promise.
According to the statement, Akpabio only informed his colleagues that the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is working to address issues arising from the primaries and that the party’s final list of candidates would be released in accordance with established rules and procedures.
The Senate President reiterated his commitment to party discipline, stressing that he would not interfere in the APC’s internal processes.
The statement also clarified remarks attributed to Akpabio regarding a possible Senate probe of the military over recent security incidents. It noted that while legislative oversight remains a constitutional responsibility, he believes this is not the appropriate time for a public inquiry.
According to the statement, Akpabio favours closed-door engagements with security agencies, warning that public hearings could undermine troop morale as security forces continue operations against terrorism and banditry across the country.
The Senate President’s office urged media organisations to seek clarification before publishing reports on sensitive issues.
