As the world marks International Albinism Awareness Day 2026, Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called for increased public awareness on the rights, dignity, health, and wellbeing of persons living with albinism. She urged Nigerians to support efforts that promote inclusion and protect individuals affected by the condition.
In her message commemorating the day, with the theme “Demanding Our Rights: Protect Our Skin, Preserve Our Lives,” the First Lady highlighted the persistent challenges faced by persons with albinism, including discrimination, stigma, and serious health risks. She noted that many continue to suffer from heightened vulnerability to skin cancer due to prolonged sun exposure and limited access to essential protective and medical care.
She stressed the need for improved access to sunscreen, protective clothing, regular skin screenings, and treatment services, describing them as critical to safeguarding lives. According to her, strengthening healthcare support systems will significantly improve quality of life for persons living with albinism.
The First Lady further called on Nigerians to foster a more inclusive society where individuals with albinism are treated with fairness, love, respect, and equal opportunity, while ensuring their rights are fully protected across all sectors.
