The Chairman of the Federal Capital Territory Football Association (FCTFA), Adam Mouktar Mohammed, has called on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to replicate the sports development model implemented in Rivers State to transform Abuja into a thriving football economy.
Speaking on the potential of sports as a driver of economic growth, Mohammed said the FCT possesses vast but largely untapped opportunities in football, stressing that strategic investment in infrastructure, talent development, and sports administration could position Abuja as a leading football hub in Nigeria.
He noted that Rivers State witnessed significant growth in sports development under Wike’s leadership as governor, citing investments in sporting facilities and support for football development. According to him, adopting a similar approach in the FCT would create jobs, attract investment, boost tourism, and provide opportunities for young athletes.
Mohammed further emphasized that football remains one of Nigeria’s most valuable cultural and economic assets, capable of generating substantial revenue while promoting youth engagement and social development.
The appeal comes amid growing calls for increased investment in sports as a tool for economic diversification and youth empowerment across the country. Stakeholders believe that with the right policies and infrastructure, Abuja can emerge as a major centre for sports business and football development in Nigeria.
