Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Saturday shared a light-hearted moment with former Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar, during activities marking the latter’s 84th birthday celebration.

Speaking at the event, Obasanjo humorously told Abdulsalami that he was confident the former military leader would live to celebrate his 100th birthday. However, he added that he and former Head of State, Yakubu Gowon, might not be alive to witness the milestone.

“You will reach 100, but Gowon and I may not be there to celebrate it with you,” Obasanjo said, drawing laughter from guests and dignitaries at the gathering.

The former president praised Abdulsalami for his service to Nigeria, describing him as a statesman whose leadership and commitment to national unity have earned him respect across the country and beyond.

Abdulsalami, who served as Nigeria’s military Head of State between 1998 and 1999, is widely credited with successfully overseeing the nation’s transition from military rule to democratic governance. He handed over power to a democratically elected government on May 29, 1999, paving the way for the Fourth Republic.

The birthday celebration attracted political leaders, former public office holders, traditional rulers, and other distinguished Nigerians who paid glowing tributes to the elder statesman.

Speakers at the event commended Abdulsalami’s contributions to peace, democracy, and national development, while praying for his continued good health and longevity.

The former Head of State has remained active in national affairs through mediation, peace-building initiatives, and efforts aimed at promoting good governance and national cohesion.
