Troops of the Joint Task Force North West operating under Operation FANSAN YAMMA have rescued the wife of late retired Major General Rabe Abubakar during an intensified military offensive against bandit groups in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State.

The development comes days after authorities confirmed the death of the retired senior military officer while in captivity, an incident that has reignited national concern over the worsening security situation across northwestern Nigeria.

Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information and respected military spokesperson, was abducted alongside his wife on May 30, 2026, when suspected bandits ambushed their vehicle along a route in Matazu Local Government Area. The couple was reportedly travelling through the area when armed men intercepted them and whisked them away to an unknown location.

Following the abduction, security agencies launched search-and-rescue operations across several communities within Matazu and neighbouring local government areas.

Intelligence gathering efforts were intensified as troops worked to track the movements of the armed groups believed to be responsible for the attack.
On June 13, authorities announced that General Abubakar had died in captivity.

Preliminary reports indicated that the retired officer, who reportedly suffered from underlying health conditions, including diabetes and hypertension, experienced medical complications while being held by his captors.

His death drew widespread condemnation from government officials, military veterans, civil society groups, and members of the public, many of whom described the incident as a stark reminder of the persistent threat posed by armed criminal groups operating across the North-West region.

In response, the Defence Headquarters launched Operation Clean Sweep III, a coordinated counter-banditry campaign aimed at locating the remaining hostage, dismantling criminal enclaves, and bringing those responsible for the abduction to justice.

The operation, conducted under the broader framework of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, involves a combination of ground troops, intelligence assets, surveillance capabilities, and coordinated security operations across identified flashpoints in Katsina State.

Military sources disclosed that troops carried out a series of intelligence-led raids, fighting patrols, cordon-and-search missions, and clearance operations in forested areas and known bandit hideouts around Matazu and adjoining communities.

During the operations, security forces reportedly disrupted several criminal networks and destroyed logistics bases used by armed groups to coordinate attacks and hold hostages.

Authorities confirmed that Mrs. Abubakar was successfully rescued during one of the operations. However, officials have yet to provide details regarding the precise circumstances surrounding her rescue, including whether any suspects were apprehended or neutralised during the mission.

Defence officials stated that ongoing military operations remain focused on sustaining pressure on criminal groups operating in the region and preventing further attacks on residents and travellers.

The abduction of a retired senior military officer and his wife has underscored the growing security challenges confronting communities in Katsina State and other parts of northwestern Nigeria, where banditry, kidnapping for ransom, and violent attacks have continued despite repeated military interventions.

Over the past several years, armed groups have targeted villages, highways, and rural communities across the region, forcing thousands of residents to flee their homes and disrupting economic activities.

Security analysts say the incident highlights the need for stronger intelligence coordination, improved surveillance capabilities, and enhanced collaboration between military forces, local authorities, and community stakeholders.
As military operations continue across the region, Defence Headquarters has reiterated its commitment to pursuing those responsible for the abduction and death of General Abubakar and restoring stability to affected communities.

Authorities have assured residents that additional security measures are being implemented to strengthen the ongoing crackdown on bandit groups and improve safety across Katsina State and the wider North-West region. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
