The Federal Government says it will roll out 10,000 electric tricycles in August 2026 as part of efforts to improve public transportation and modernise Nigeria’s logistics system.

Vice President Kashim Shettima disclosed this during a courtesy visit by The Transporters for Tinubu/Shettima 2027, noting that the initiative will be implemented through the North East Development Commission (NEDC) and extended beyond the North-East region.

He said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the replication of the electric tricycle initiative across other parts of the country through the various regional development commissions.

According to him, the administration is focused on transitioning Nigeria from a fragmented transport system to an integrated logistics chain linking ports, rail, roads, inland waterways, aviation, and energy infrastructure.

Shettima explained that the transport reform agenda includes the nationwide rollout of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), major port upgrades, and the strengthening of logistics networks to reduce the cost and inefficiency of movement across the country.

He added that the goal is to improve conditions for transport workers across all sectors while enhancing national productivity through better connectivity between farms, markets, industries, and ports.

The Vice President further highlighted ongoing reforms in the maritime sector, including the operationalisation of the Lekki Deep Sea Port, development of the National Single Window, and renewed focus on inland waterways to improve efficiency and global competitiveness.

He stressed that the administration remains committed to policies that support affordable energy for transport, sustainable fleet operations, and improved working conditions for operators in the sector.

Earlier, stakeholders under The Transporters for Tinubu/Shettima 2027 paid a courtesy visit to the Vice President, expressing support for the administration and commending ongoing reforms in the transport sector.

They pledged to mobilise support across various transport unions ahead of the 2027 general elections, citing confidence in the government’s direction and policy implementation.
