Nigeria Faces Increased Flood Risk in Coming Weeks, NiHSA Warns

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NiHSA) has cautioned Nigerians to prepare for an increased risk of flooding over the next 12 weeks as rainfall intensifies across the country.

The agency’s Director-General, Umar Mohammed, said the nation is entering the peak of the rainy season, a period expected to bring heavier rainfall and a greater likelihood of floods in several states. He explained that the most severe flooding is anticipated between August and September.

Mohammed noted that NiHSA had earlier released its Annual Flood Outlook and issued warnings to federal and state authorities on areas likely to be affected.

He urged governments and residents to act on these advisories to reduce the impact of the expected floods.

He identified Lagos as one of the states most exposed to flooding due to a combination of heavy rainfall, overflowing rivers and coastal tides. He added that blocked drainage systems, poor waste disposal and rapid urban development have further increased the state’s vulnerability.

The agency also warned that floodwaters could pollute drinking water sources, raising the risk of waterborne diseases in affected communities.

NiHSA called on residents to keep drainage channels free of waste, avoid flood-prone areas during heavy rainfall and comply with official safety advisories. It also urged emergency management agencies and state governments to strengthen preparedness efforts to protect lives and property during the peak rainy season. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
