President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on civil society organisations (CSOs) across Nigeria to align more closely with the nation’s development goals, urging them to prioritise national interests and avoid foreign influences that could undermine the country’s sovereignty and progress.
The President made the call at the Southern Civil Society Organisations Summit in Lagos, where he was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume.
Speaking on the theme, “Nigeria First and Sustainable Development,” Tinubu commended CSOs for their contributions during national emergencies, including the COVID-19 pandemic and flood disasters, describing their interventions as acts of patriotism.
He said civil society groups should not be seen only as critics of government but as strategic partners in advancing sustainable development, good governance, poverty reduction and human capital development.
According to the President, the summit’s theme aligns with the objectives of the Renewed Hope Agenda and the administration’s priority areas, including economic reforms, security, food production, infrastructure, education, healthcare and industrialisation.
Tinubu identified food security as a key area for collaboration, urging CSOs to work with government and local communities to promote climate-smart agriculture, support farmers and strengthen environmental protection measures.
He also highlighted opportunities in the marine and blue economy, renewable energy and climate-related industries as pathways for job creation and poverty reduction, particularly for young people and women.
The President assured participants that his administration welcomes constructive engagement and accountability, encouraging CSOs to deepen their involvement in budget monitoring, community oversight and initiatives that improve public service delivery.
He further called for stronger collaboration in education and healthcare, noting that climate change continues to pose challenges through the spread of diseases and environmental disruptions.
However, Tinubu cautioned civil society organisations to exercise care in accepting foreign funding, stressing that national interest, transparency and ethical considerations should guide their operations at all times.
