The Federal Government has announced that more than 78,000 frontline health workers have been retrained under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive to strengthen primary healthcare delivery across the country.

Speaking on the initiative, the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr. Muyi Aina, said the President had directed the retraining of 120,000 frontline health workers to ensure they possess up-to-date knowledge and skills for quality healthcare service delivery.

According to Dr. Aina, over 78,000 health workers have already completed an intensive two-week competency-based training programme designed to improve their capacity to deliver effective primary healthcare services.

As part of the reform, the Federal Government has developed a modern curriculum tailored to current healthcare needs and launched a national e-learning platform to support continuous professional development without disrupting healthcare services.

To improve accessibility, the training modules have been translated into English, Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo and Pidgin English, enabling health workers across the country to participate in self-paced mobile learning, complete assessments and regularly update their knowledge.

The programme has also been incorporated into the continuing professional development requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria and the Community Health Practitioners Registration Board, creating a sustainable framework for continuous learning.

The initiative forms part of the Tinubu administration’s broader efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s primary healthcare system, improve service delivery and build a more skilled and resilient health workforce under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
