Vice President Kashim Shettima has directed local government chairmen across the country to drive the implementation of the Nutrition 774 (N-774) Initiative at the grassroots to improve nutritional outcomes in communities nationwide.
The Vice President gave the directive on Friday during a courtesy visit by the National Executive Committee of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) on the Nutrition 774 Initiative at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
He urged ALGON to play an active role in strengthening the Local Government Committees on Food and Nutrition, stressing that the committees should serve as centres for planning, coordination, implementation and accountability in all 774 local government areas.
According to Senator Shettima, reinforcing these committees presents an opportunity to strengthen Nigeria’s nutrition governance framework and ensure that interventions reach communities where they are most needed.
“I believe that strengthening the Local Government Committees on Food and Nutrition presents an important opportunity to reinforce this governance framework. These committees should become centres of planning, coordination, implementation and accountability within every Local Government Area,” the Vice President said.
He further urged ALGON to lead the process with determination, ensuring that every local government develops functional structures capable of delivering measurable improvements in nutrition at the grassroots.
The Nutrition 774 Initiative is aimed at strengthening collaboration among federal, state and local governments to tackle malnutrition and improve food and nutrition outcomes across Nigeria through coordinated community-based interventions.
