The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for reforms that have repositioned the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) as a key institution driving Nigeria’s digital identity transformation and economic development.

Speaking on Friday in Abuja while receiving the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NIMC, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, and her delegation, Akume said President Tinubu had demonstrated remarkable foresight by recognising science, technology and digital innovation as essential pillars of national development.

According to the SGF, the President’s revitalisation of NIMC and his assent to the NIMC Act, 2026, have provided the legal and institutional framework needed to strengthen digital identity management and accelerate Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda.

Akume said the new legislation reinforces the Commission’s mandate while advancing the Federal Government’s objective of achieving data sovereignty by enabling Nigeria to build, manage and secure its own digital identity infrastructure without excessive reliance on foreign systems.

He also noted that the Tinubu administration’s transition to a paperless public service marks another significant milestone in its digital governance agenda, adding that digital processes will improve efficiency, enhance accountability and accelerate service delivery across government institutions.

The SGF described NIMC as a critical enabler of the Federal Government’s digital transformation programme, noting that a robust digital identity ecosystem would support economic growth, public sector reforms and improved access to government services.

Akume further praised the Director-General of NIMC, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, for her leadership and commitment to implementing the reforms envisioned under the new NIMC Act. He credited her with driving innovation, transparency and accountability within the Commission while advancing the administration’s vision of building a globally competitive digital economy.

The Federal Government continues to position digital identity, technology and innovation as central components of the Renewed Hope Agenda aimed at modernising governance, strengthening service delivery and expanding opportunities in Nigeria’s digital economy.
