Kamala Harris will not address her supporters on election night, her campaign announced Wednesday, as Donald Trump edged closer to victory in the tense US presidential race.
“You won’t hear from the vice president tonight, but you will hear from her tomorrow,” Cedric Richmond, Harris’ campaign co-chair, told a watch party at Howard University in Washington, D.C.
Trump was declared the winner of the US presidential election by multiple media outlets on Wednesday, securing a stunning political comeback that sent shockwaves through the country and around the world.
His victory was all the more remarkable given the backdrop of an unprecedented criminal conviction, a close call with an assassination attempt, and scathing warnings from a former chief of staff who labeled him a “fascist.”
“It’s a political victory that our country has never seen before,” Trump said in a victory speech in Florida.
Vice President Harris, who only entered the race in July after President Joe Biden dropped out, ran a centrist campaign focused on countering Trump’s polarizing rhetoric, which often included racist and sexist undertones. She highlighted his inflammatory messaging on immigration and his embrace of isolationist policies.
However, Trump’s apocalyptic warnings about immigration and his appeal to voters disillusioned by the post-Covid economy proved to be effective, especially among those seeking a shift from the Biden administration’s policies.
While the race was expected to be a close one, the results came in faster than anticipated, delivering a decisive victory for Trump with key wins in swing states like Georgia, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania.
Trump now becomes the first president in more than a century to win a non-consecutive second term.
