President Bola Tinubu extended his heartfelt congratulations to Chief Onyema Ugochukwu, a revered journalist and former Chairman of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), as he celebrates his 80th birthday today. In a statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information & Strategy, Tinubu praised Ugochukwu’s lifetime of service, resilience, and unwavering dedication to Nigeria.
The President’s message highlighted Ugochukwu’s journey through several defining moments in Nigeria’s history, describing him as a source of inspiration for future generations. Born during a turbulent time, Ugochukwu joined the Biafran forces in the Nigerian Civil War (1967-1970), driven by conviction. After the war, he returned to complete his education, graduating with distinction.
Ugochukwu’s career began in 1973 as an economic research assistant at the Central Bank of Nigeria, but his passion soon led him to journalism. Joining the Daily Times of Nigeria in 1975, he pioneered business journalism in the country, rising to become Business Editor, Daily Newspaper Editor, and eventually Executive Director. His public service continued as a Special Adviser to former President Olusegun Obasanjo and as the founding Chairman of the NDDC, where he advanced development efforts in the Niger Delta. He later ran for governor of Abia State, further demonstrating his commitment to public service.
Now celebrated as an elder statesman and recipient of the national honor Commander of the Order of the Niger, Ugochukwu’s life exemplifies dedication, humility, and selflessness.
President Tinubu joins Nigerians in celebrating Ugochukwu’s legacy, praying for his continued health and longevity, with hopes that the nation will continue to benefit from his wisdom and experience for years to come.
