United States President-elect Donald Trump reportedly held a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, urging restraint in the ongoing Ukraine conflict, according to The Washington Post. The call, made from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate on Thursday, came shortly after his victory over Democratic candidate Kamala Harris. Trump reportedly reminded Putin of the U.S. military presence in Europe and expressed an interest in reaching a peaceful resolution in Ukraine.
Trump’s communications director, Steven Cheung, declined to confirm the conversation, stating, “We do not comment on private calls between President Trump and other world leaders.” However, sources familiar with the call noted that Trump emphasized the importance of avoiding further escalation.
The president-elect also spoke with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Sunday, where the leaders agreed to collaborate on restoring peace in Europe, according to Scholz’s spokesperson.
Trump’s unexpected election victory has raised speculation about how his approach may impact the nearly three-year Ukraine conflict. During his campaign, Trump advocated for a quick resolution to the war and has questioned the billions of dollars the U.S. has committed to supporting Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held a call with Trump on Wednesday, which reportedly included Elon Musk, who has been involved in Ukraine through the provision of Starlink communications.
In contrast, President Joe Biden’s administration is accelerating support for Ukraine before Trump’s inauguration in January. Biden’s National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan, announced plans to use the remaining $6 billion in Ukraine aid to bolster Kyiv’s position on the battlefield, which he believes would enhance its position in eventual peace talks.
The Kremlin has responded positively to Trump’s interest in peace, with spokesman Dmitry Peskov noting, “The signals are positive… At least he’s talking about peace, not confrontation.” However, Trump’s stance has raised concerns among European allies, particularly regarding potential concessions of Ukrainian territory.
Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., commented on social media, implying that Ukraine might soon lose U.S. financial support. Former Trump advisor Bryan Lanza also suggested that Ukraine should consider relinquishing any claims to Crimea.
Meanwhile, the situation on the ground remains tense, with both sides ramping up attacks over the weekend. Ukraine reported a record 145 Russian drone strikes, while Russia claimed to have downed 34 Ukrainian drones targeting Moscow. As Trump prepares to assume office, the world is watching closely to see how his approach to the Ukraine conflict will reshape the geopolitical landscape.
