Human rights lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju has announced the arrest of his client, musician Darlington Okoye, better known as Speed Darlington or AKPI, by the police in Owerri, Imo State.
Adeyanju made the announcement in a statement on his official Facebook page, saying, “Our client Speed Darlington a.k.a AKPI has been arrested by the Nigerian Police in Owerri at his show upon return to Nigeria.”
While Adeyanju did not specify the reason for the arrest, he confirmed that Speed Darlington was detained after returning to Nigeria for a performance.
It is worth noting that Speed Darlington was previously detained over allegations of cyberstalking fellow musician Damini Ogulu, known as Burna Boy. In a video posted on his social media, Speed Darlington had linked Burna Boy to disgraced American rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs and questioned the legitimacy of his Grammy Award.
Following the incident, Adeyanju revealed that Burna Boy had filed a petition against Speed Darlington. However, the lawyer emphasized that there was no substance to the petition that would justify an arrest.
“I have met with Speed Darlington, and he is in good spirits. We are working to secure his release on bail as soon as possible,” Adeyanju said.
