A Nigerian Army captain and two soldiers are feared to have been killed after an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) exploded during a routine military patrol in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.
The incident occurred at Maciyan-Kyada village in Babanna Ward when the patrol vehicle conveying the troops reportedly drove over an IED suspected to have been planted by terrorists. Two other soldiers sustained injuries in the explosion and were evacuated for medical treatment.
Security sources said the troops had departed Babanna town on a routine operation before the explosion occurred. A resident of the area identified one of the deceased as Yusuf Kabir, adding that the incident has heightened fear among residents.
Although the reported casualties have sparked concern, the Nigerian military and the Niger State Government had not officially confirmed the deaths as of the time of filing this report.
The latest attack highlights the continued security challenges in parts of Niger State and the wider North-Central region, where terrorists and other armed groups have increasingly used roadside bombs to target security personnel despite ongoing military operations.
