Why I Support Single Six-Year Presidential Tenure – Bamidele

The Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, has explained his support for the proposal advocating a single six-year presidential tenure in Nigeria, saying the idea is aimed at improving governance stability and reducing the distractions of re-election politics.

Bamidele stated that the current four-year renewable tenure often forces political leaders into early campaign mode, which can affect focus on governance delivery. According to him, a single, longer tenure would allow a president to concentrate fully on policy implementation without the pressure of seeking re-election.

He added that the proposal is not targeted at any individual but is intended as part of broader constitutional discussions on strengthening Nigeria’s democratic system and improving efficiency in leadership.

The Senate Leader noted that such reforms, if considered, would require wide consultation and constitutional amendment involving the National Assembly and other stakeholders.

Bamidele’s remarks have continued to generate debate among political observers, with supporters arguing it could enhance governance stability, while critics warn it may reduce democratic accountability through electoral competition.
