The Kaduna State University (KASU) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has officially suspended its strike, which began on February 18, 2025.
This was confirmed in a statement issued on Monday by the KASU ASUU Chairman, Dr. Peter Adamu. According to Adamu, the decision to call off the strike was made on Saturday, February 24 after significant progress was made in negotiations with the government.
Government’s Commitment Leads to Strike Suspension
Adamu highlighted that the Kaduna State Government took decisive steps to address the union’s demands.
“The government demonstrated goodwill in resolving the impasse by immediately releasing funds to pay the 60 per cent of September 2017 withheld salaries and Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) supervision allowance for five sessions,” he stated.
Additionally, the government agreed to a timeline for settling outstanding payments, including:
- Five months of withheld salaries (May to September 2022)
- Promotion arrears
- Earned Academic Allowance (EAA)
- Pension remittance (2009–2019)
- Death benefits
- Group Life Assurance
Government Assures University Autonomy & Wage Awards
Dr. Adamu also noted that the state government has pledged to implement wage awards and grant autonomy to Kaduna State University.
ASUU expressed deep appreciation to Governor Uba Sani for his swift intervention in resolving the crisis. The union also acknowledged the contributions of the university management, the Commissioner for Education, the Commissioner for Sports, and other stakeholders for their role in ending the impasse.
Academic Staff Directed to Resume Work Immediately
Following the resolution, ASUU has directed all academic staff at Kaduna State University to resume duties immediately and continue providing quality education to students.
The suspension of the strike comes as a relief to thousands of students and staff, ensuring the continuity of academic activities at the institution.
