Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has called on the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) to sustain its technical support for democratic governance and electoral integrity in Nigeria.

Kalu made the appeal during an engagement with representatives of the UK development agency, emphasizing the importance of continued international collaboration in strengthening democratic institutions and governance processes in the country.

The Deputy Speaker noted that technical assistance and institutional support have played a significant role in promoting transparency, accountability, and the credibility of electoral processes in Nigeria.

He stressed the need to consolidate gains already recorded in democratic development by supporting reforms, capacity building, and initiatives aimed at enhancing public confidence in governance and elections.

According to Kalu, strong democratic institutions remain essential to political stability, national development, and the protection of citizens’ rights.

He also reaffirmed the commitment of the National Assembly to advancing legislative reforms that will strengthen democracy, improve governance outcomes, and deepen public participation in the democratic process.

The engagement forms part of ongoing efforts to foster partnerships aimed at supporting democratic consolidation and institutional development in Nigeria.
