This week, on August 21st, Ogiame Atuwatse III, the Olu of Warri, will mark his third year on the throne. Deeply respected by his subjects, the monarch has continuously worked towards elevating Warri Kingdom and the broader Niger Delta region, leveraging his connections in the oil and gas sector to attract significant development.

Since ascending the throne, the Olu of Warri has focused on promoting peace and development within the kingdom. One of his key initiatives, Ghegho Aghofen—meaning “Palace Watch”—requires each community in the kingdom to spend three months ceremonially guarding the palace. At the end of their watch, the Olu visits the community to offer prayers for peace, prosperity, and abundant blessings. Communities like Okere and Obitugbo have already benefitted from his royal blessings, fostering stronger ties between the monarch and his people.

The Ghegho Aghofen program has also reignited interest in Itsekiri culture among the youth. The ceremonial handover of the palace watch flag from one community to another has become a vibrant celebration of Itsekiri traditions, with participants showcasing their rich cultural dances and attire. This initiative has helped preserve the cultural heritage and attracted both locals and tourists.

In his drive for peace and integration, the Olu of Warri has extended invitations to neighboring ethnic groups and non-natives to participate in these events, promoting unity in the region. The success of Ghegho Aghofen has even drawn comparisons to the renowned Igue Festival of the Benin Kingdom, with some predicting it will soon gain international attention.

As the Olu of Warri celebrates his third coronation anniversary, a week-long program of activities has been planned, including praise and worship, homage-paying ceremonies, an anniversary lecture, a novelty match by Olori ladies, and a grand award ceremony. The celebration will culminate on Saturday, when distinguished Itsekiri sons and daughters will be honored by His Majesty.

Alongside the Olu, his wife, the Olori of Warri, has played an active role in advancing the kingdom’s prosperity through entrepreneurial initiatives and free medical outreach programs. The 3rd anniversary of Ogiame Atuwatse III’s reign is set to draw influential figures to Warri, a testament to the monarch’s growing legacy.
