President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of His Imperial Majesty, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, who died at the age of 90.

In a statement issued by the State House, the President conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the royal family, the government and people of Oyo State, and the entire Ibadanland on the loss of a revered monarch, statesman, and symbol of peace, wisdom, and continuity.

President Tinubu paid tribute to the late Olubadan’s remarkable life of dedicated service to his people, the state, and the nation at large. He described the monarch as a distinguished custodian of culture and tradition, who exemplified the highest ideals of leadership, knowledge, and integrity.

“Oba Owolabi Olakulehin was not only a guardian of Ibadan’s rich history and cultural heritage, but also a man of intellect and principle whose influence extended well beyond the palace. His contributions to education, governance, and national development are enduring,” the President said.

Reflecting on a recent interaction, President Tinubu revealed: “Just last week, I received an invitation from the late Olubadan to his 90th birthday and first coronation anniversary celebrations. His sudden passing, only days before the occasion, is a deeply painful shock. He will be remembered for upholding the honour and prestige of the Olubadan stool.”

Born on July 5, 1935, in Okugbaja village, Ita Baale near Akanran (present-day Ibadan North East LGA), Oba Olakulehin ascended the throne on March 14, 2024, following the passing of Oba Dr Moshood Lekan Balogun, Alli Okunmade II. His rise through Ibadan’s respected succession system, alternating between the Otun civil and Balogun military lines, reflects the enduring strength of the city’s traditional institutions.

A highly respected academic, Oba Olakulehin held a master’s degree in administration and economics, with additional pursuit of doctoral studies. He was known for his integrity-driven scholarship and principled stance against sycophancy. He lectured at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he inspired many with his devotion to research, public accountability, and national progress.

President Tinubu praised the late monarch’s legacy as one that seamlessly bridged tradition and modernity. “His wisdom and moral authority served as a stabilising force in Ibadanland and across the Yoruba nation,” he said.

The President prayed for the peaceful repose of the monarch’s soul and urged the people of Ibadan to find comfort in the rich legacy, values, and honour Oba Olakulehin embodied during his lifetime.
