Guaranty Trust Holding Company (GTCO) has made a significant mark in the lives of over 5,000 families over the past 15 years with its dedicated autism awareness campaign. The initiative, known as the Orange Ribbon Initiative, began in 2009 with a vision to raise awareness and provide advocacy for children living with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
In a press conference held to unveil the 15th edition of the GTCO Autism Conference, Oyinade Adegite, Head of Communication at the company, outlined the impact and goals of the campaign. “This year’s conference, themed ‘Advancing Autism Inclusion,’ will take place from July 15 to 16 and will be held in both Nigeria and Ghana,” she stated. Adegite emphasized that this year’s event reflects GTCO’s ongoing commitment to driving awareness and promoting lasting, inclusive change for individuals with neurodevelopmental differences.
The Guaranty Trust Annual Autism Conference has been a key platform for autism advocacy and intervention across Africa, empowering individuals and families with the necessary resources and support. “For 15 years, this conference has not only educated but has spurred actionable changes,” Adegite continued. “Awareness is only the beginning. Real change happens when we take action, ensuring children living with autism are seen, supported, and included at every stage of life.”
Dr. Grace Bamgboye, a consultant Speech-Language Specialist, also reflected on the progress made in early intervention, attributing much of the improvement to GTCO’s autism campaign. “Parents with children living with autism now bring their children out into the community, whereas before, many hid their children at home,” Dr. Bamgboye explained, noting that this shift represents a significant cultural and societal transformation.
The company’s autism awareness initiative has fostered a more inclusive environment, where families feel empowered to seek help and access early interventions. Over the years, GTCO has continued to drive positive change, ensuring that individuals living with autism are not only supported but actively included in all aspects of society.
This year’s conference promises to further amplify these efforts, continuing the conversation on autism inclusion while also offering critical resources for families in Nigeria and Ghana. With the success of the past 15 years, GTCO’s Orange Ribbon Initiative has cemented itself as a cornerstone of corporate social responsibility in Africa, demonstrating the bank’s commitment to fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment for children with ASD.
