Barcelona starlet Lamine Yamal has officially been handed the club’s legendary No. 10 jersey, once worn by Lionel Messi. The 18-year-old winger, widely seen as one of the brightest talents to emerge from La Masia in recent years, received the shirt on Wednesday during an event at the club shop at the Spotify Camp Nou.
“Messi made his path, and I will make mine,” Yamal told reporters. “I’ll give everything for the club, work as hard as I can, and try to make the fans—whether in the stadium or at home—proud.”
Yamal, who made his debut for Barcelona at just 15 wearing the No. 41, has already made over 100 appearances and scored 25 goals for the club. He played a crucial role in Barcelona’s domestic treble last season and signed a new contract in May, keeping him at the club until 2031 and making him one of their top earners.
“Barça is my life. I’ve been here since I was seven,” he said. “Every kid from La Masia dreams of making it to the first team. I’m living that dream—but now the work continues.”
Last season, Yamal wore the No. 27 before switching to No. 19—once worn by Messi early in his career. Taking on the No. 10 now marks another symbolic step in his rise.
“I dreamed of this number as a child,” Yamal added. “Now I want to enjoy this season even more than the last, win the Champions League with Barça, and the World Cup with Spain.”
