WAFCON 2024: Nigeria to Face South Africa in Blockbuster Semi-Final Clash

Share

South Africa have booked their spot in the semi-finals of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) — and their reward is a highly anticipated showdown with arch-rivals Nigeria.

Banyana Banyana edged past Senegal 4-1 in a tense penalty shootout after their quarter-final clash ended goalless after regulation and extra time on Saturday at the Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca, Morocco.

Nigeria, meanwhile, cruised into the semi-finals a day earlier with a dominant 5-0 win over Zambia’s Copper Queens, maintaining their perfect record in the tournament. The Super Falcons have now scored eight goals and are yet to concede in four matches — a remarkable defensive run that highlights their title credentials.

The semi-final encounter between Nigeria and South Africa will take place at the same venue, setting up a rematch of their memorable 2022 WAFCON meeting, also held in Morocco. On that occasion, South Africa claimed a 2-1 victory over the defending champions — a measure of revenge after losing the 2018 final to Nigeria.

As the tournament reaches its decisive stages, all eyes are now on Tuesday’s clash between two of Africa’s most accomplished women’s teams.
