Former Borno State governor, Ali Modu Sheriff, has suggested that the 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, may soon return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to pursue his 2027 presidential ambition. Sheriff made the disclosure during a recent interview, where he hinted that Obi could emerge as the PDP’s presidential flagbearer in the upcoming election.

Obi, who recently joined forces with other key opposition figures under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition, has openly shown interest in contesting the 2027 polls. The coalition aims to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Meanwhile, there are growing speculations that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar may also throw his hat into the ring, potentially setting the stage for a major showdown within the PDP.

Sheriff noted that Atiku, having served as vice president, would only be aiming for the presidency and suggested that Obi’s return to the PDP would be strategic. “Information available to me is that any moment from now, Obi would go back to the PDP and run as a presidential candidate under the PDP,” he said, adding that Atiku and other contenders like Rotimi Amaechi might struggle to match Obi’s growing influence across the states.
