Southern Europe Endures Worst Wildfires in Decades

Share

Southern Europe is battling its most severe wildfire crisis in decades, fueled by an unrelenting heatwave.

France: A massive blaze in the Aude region has destroyed over 16,000 hectares, killed one person, and injured dozens. Hot spots remain active, and forests are closed as temperatures stay high.

Italy: Fires on Mount Vesuvius have forced tourist trail closures, with arson suspected. Hundreds of firefighters and aircraft are deployed.

Greece & Cyprus: Blazes near Athens and in Cyprus have killed at least three people in recent weeks, destroyed homes, and forced evacuations.

Wider Region: Spain, Turkey, and Portugal also face major fires. Turkey has recorded 17 deaths. Temperatures above 42 °C continue to fuel the crisis.

Innovative Measures: In Catalonia, Spain, goat herds are being used to clear dry vegetation and create natural firebreaks.

Authorities warn the danger will persist for weeks, with no immediate weather relief expected.
