President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced a new youth empowerment programme under the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI) aimed at training 5,000 young Nigerians as meter installers and technicians.

The initiative, known as “The Power Force,” is designed to close Nigeria’s metering gap, end estimated billing, protect electricity consumers, and strengthen the national power sector.

According to the President, the programme will provide participants with practical technical skills and connect them to real employment opportunities in the electricity value chain, which directly impacts households, businesses, and communities across the country.

Tinubu said the initiative forms part of his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises job creation, skills development, and youth empowerment.

He explained that applicants must have completed secondary school education, while a portion of slots will be reserved for members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

The President noted that effective metering is critical to improving transparency and efficiency in the electricity sector, as it ensures consumers pay for actual usage while enabling distribution companies to improve revenue collection, reduce losses, and invest in better service delivery.

Tinubu directed the Presidential Metering Initiative to work with the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, NAPTIN, and other stakeholders to commence implementation within 30 days.

He encouraged eligible young Nigerians to apply for the programme, describing it as an opportunity to gain skills, earn dignified income, and contribute to efforts to improve electricity supply in Nigeria.
