Liverpool launched their Premier League title defence with a thrilling late 4-2 victory over Bournemouth on an emotional night at Anfield. The evening was marked by tributes to forward Diogo Jota and his brother, André Silva, who tragically died in a car crash in July. A minute’s silence was observed before kick-off, with applause ringing out in the 20th minute in honour of Jota’s shirt number.

Arne Slot handed debuts to four of his summer signings, and it was £70m arrival Hugo Ekitike who broke the deadlock eight minutes before half-time with a clinical finish. The French striker then set up Cody Gakpo to double Liverpool’s lead shortly after the restart. Bournemouth, however, fought back valiantly, with Antoine Semenyo — who had earlier reported being racially abused from the stands — striking twice to level the contest heading into the closing stages.

Just when the visitors looked poised to claim a famous point, substitute Federico Chiesa marked his first Premier League appearance with a crucial goal two minutes from time. Mohamed Salah sealed the result moments later with a composed finish in front of The Kop, ensuring Liverpool began their campaign with three points despite a spirited Bournemouth fightback.
