Former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusuf Buratai (Rtd.), has said the Federal Government has the authority to shut Nigeria’s borders as part of efforts to decisively deal with terrorists and other criminal groups destabilising the country.
Buratai explained that porous borders have continued to enable the influx of arms, ammunition, and fighters, stressing that a temporary lockdown would disrupt the logistics and funding channels of terrorist organisations.
He noted, however, that while border closure could have economic implications, safeguarding national security must remain the government’s top priority.
