President Tinubu Declares 9th National Youth Games Open in Asaba, Reaffirms Commitment to Sports Development

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday declared open the 9th National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State, pledging stronger investment in grassroots sports as a vehicle for national unity, youth empowerment, and global competitiveness.

Represented by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, the President described sports as a unifying force for Nigeria’s diverse population and a pathway for young talents to achieve international excellence. He assured that his administration would provide the structures, facilities, and policies needed to nurture future champions.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State, represented by the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, welcomed participants and commended the Games for promoting unity through healthy competition. He said Delta was fully prepared to host a safe and memorable championship.

The Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, highlighted the Games as the foundation for discovering athletes who will go on to dominate continental and global competitions. He pledged to intensify efforts to harness emerging talents through structured training and international exposure.

The opening ceremony also featured the traditional oath-taking, with athletes, coaches, and officials pledging fairness and discipline.

This year’s Games will feature 37 sporting events with contingents from 33 states and the Federal Capital Territory. Host state Delta, which has won all eight previous editions, is aiming for a ninth consecutive title as Asaba becomes the stage for ten days of thrilling competition and talent discovery.
