A landslide has leveled the village of Tarasin in Sudan’s Marrah Mountains, leaving hundreds dead and possibly more than 1,000 victims, according to the UN and local rebel authorities.

Triggered by days of heavy rain on August 31, the disaster buried the entire community. The Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM/A) says only one survivor remains, while UN estimates place the toll between 300 and 1,000.

Rescue and aid efforts are hampered by conflict, flooding, and blocked access routes. The UN called the tragedy one of Sudan’s deadliest natural disasters in decades, striking amid a civil war and widespread famine.
