United Nigeria Airlines (UNA) has taken a major step in its growth strategy, sealing a landmark agreement with U.S.-based Southwest Airlines for the acquisition of six Boeing 737-800 Next Generation (NG) aircraft.

The deal, finalized on September 7, 2025, will see UNA take delivery of the aircraft between February and April 2026, effectively doubling its current fleet. In addition, the airline is in talks to secure four more 737-800 NGs, which could bring its total narrow-body fleet to 10 by early 2027.

Chairman of United Nigeria Airlines, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, described the agreement as a “game-changing moment” for the carrier, saying it would provide the capacity needed to meet growing passenger demand and support the airline’s expansion into regional and international markets.

The deal also establishes a long-term partnership with Southwest Airlines for technical support, pilot and crew training, and maintenance collaboration ensuring smooth entry of the aircraft into UNA’s operations.

Beyond the narrow-body expansion, UNA has also announced plans to add four wide-body aircraft by late 2025, further strengthening its network. The airline is targeting new regional destinations, beginning with its inaugural flight to Accra, Ghana, scheduled for August 25, 2025.

In preparation for international growth, UNA recently signed a global distribution agreement with Sabre, a move that will give the airline access to more than 50,000 travel agents across 200 countries, significantly boosting ticket sales worldwide.

“With this acquisition and our entry into the Sabre system, United Nigeria Airlines is positioning itself as a truly competitive African carrier, ready to connect Nigeria to the world,” Okonkwo said.

If successful, the expansion plan will see UNA transform from a domestic player into a regional powerhouse, with a modern fleet and the capacity to serve both regional and long-haul routes.
