Abuja, Nigeria — Former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, has been released by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after undergoing questioning on Wednesday.

Kyari had honoured an invitation from the anti-graft agency earlier in the day as part of ongoing investigations into alleged financial improprieties during his tenure at the state-owned oil company.

Upon arrival at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja, the former NNPCL boss told reporters, “I have done my part; the EFCC must do theirs. When each of us does our duty, without fear or favour, with honour, respect, and commitment, Nigeria moves forward.”

Although details of the interrogation remain undisclosed, the EFCC is continuing its probe into petitions alleging conspiracy, abuse of office, and money laundering. Court documents had earlier revealed that four bank accounts linked to Kyari were frozen by order of Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court, Abuja, pending further investigations.

Kyari’s release comes as the EFCC intensifies efforts to conclude its investigation ahead of a September 23 court date set for a progress report on the matter.
