The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has introduced drone technology to enhance traffic monitoring and strengthen security surveillance across the state.

Speaking on the initiative, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said the deployment of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) marks a major shift from traditional, reactive traffic enforcement to intelligence-driven, predictive operations.

The drones, equipped with high-definition cameras, will provide real-time aerial oversight of major traffic corridors, enabling faster response to congestion, accidents, and other emergencies. Officials say the technology will also help reduce travel time, minimize accidents, and promote greater motoring discipline.

According to LASTMA, the initiative complements other smart transport solutions already in use, including Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras, Intelligent Transport System (ITS) sites, and e-police monitoring facilities.

Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, assured that the drones will be operated under strict ethical and regulatory standards to safeguard public trust and privacy.

The state government described the project as a significant step toward modernizing Lagos’ traffic management system and improving overall road safety.
