Tragedy in Kogi as President Tinubu Mourns Victims of Ibaji Boat Accident

A boat mishap in Ibaji Local Government Area of Kogi State has left several people dead, prompting an outpouring of condolences from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The accident, which occurred on Tuesday, involved traders travelling from Ibaji to the Ilushi market in neighbouring Edo State. Eyewitnesses said the vessel capsized mid-journey, leading to multiple casualties.

Reacting to the incident, President Tinubu described the tragedy as “shocking and unfortunate,” stressing that the victims were ordinary Nigerians engaged in the pursuit of their livelihood.

The President urged emergency agencies across federal, state, and local levels to intensify rescue and relief operations for survivors and affected families. He also praised the swift intervention of first responders at the scene.

Tinubu further cautioned operators of water transport against prioritising profit over safety, emphasizing that stricter adherence to safety standards was critical to preventing avoidable loss of lives.

Meanwhile, prayers have continued to pour in across Kogi State for the souls of the deceased and for the quick recovery of those injured in the mishap.
