The United Nations (UN), in collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and global media firm JCDecaux, has launched the “Make A Safety Statement” campaign to promote safer roads and reduce traffic fatalities in Nigeria.
At the launch in Lagos, UN Special Envoy for Road Safety Jean Todt described road crashes as a “silent pandemic,” noting that Africa records over 250,000 deaths annually, with Nigeria losing about 37,000 lives each year. He urged citizens to “make a safety statement” by wearing seatbelts, obeying speed limits, and avoiding distractions.
FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety, targeting a 50% reduction in road crash deaths by 2030 through enforcement, education, and safer systems.
JCDecaux will use its nationwide media network to spread safety messages across billboards and public spaces.
The campaign, already active in over 40 countries, aims to reach 80 countries and 1,000 cities by 2026.
