President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of renowned evangelist and founder of the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association, Dr. Uma Ukpai, who died at the age of 80. In a heartfelt tribute issued from the State House, the President described the late cleric as “one of God’s generals” whose life was dedicated to spreading the gospel and promoting discipline, love, and good neighbourliness among humanity.
The President recounted Dr. Ukpai’s pioneering role in Nigeria’s Christian revival movement during the 1980s, recalling his major crusades, including the “Greater Ibadan for Christ” in 1982 and “Greater Lagos for Christ” in 1985, which he said left a lasting spiritual impact across the nation. He praised the evangelist’s commitment to unity within the Christian faith and his efforts in fostering peace among different religions, ethnicities, and communities.
Highlighting Dr. Ukpai’s humanitarian legacy, President Tinubu noted his contributions through the establishment of schools, hospitals, and charitable organizations that supported the less privileged. “He fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith,” the President stated, while praying for God to grant the late evangelist eternal rest.
President Tinubu extended his condolences to Dr. Ukpai’s wife, Pastor Philomena Uma Ukpai, his family, and members of his ministry, urging them to take comfort in the enduring legacy of service and faith he left behind.
