Lagos Lawmakers Push for State Railway Corporation to Improve Transportation

The Lagos State House of Assembly has passed for second reading a bill seeking to establish the Lagos State Railway Corporation.

The proposed legislation aims to provide a legal and institutional framework for rail transport development, improve mobility, ease traffic congestion, and enhance economic productivity in the state.

Speaker Mudashiru Obasa commended the initiative but questioned the continued use of “corporation,” noting global trends toward deregulation and privatization.

The bill also proposes appointing an Inspector of Railways to ensure safety and compliance with operational standards.

It has been referred to the Committee on Transportation for further consideration, with a report expected within two weeks.

If passed, the law would mark a significant milestone in Lagos State’s efforts to build a modern, integrated transport system connecting rail, road, and waterways.
